KOTA NYALA DESIGN

Every site has its distinctive character and are highly valued from its scenic rural landscape to the extensive coastline. It is what makes the place unique, appreciated for its character and its own setting. Developments can have effect upon their setting through many factors such as through appearance, scale, height, setbacks, adjoining setbacks, space between buildings, landscape, overshadowing, overlooking, increases in traffic, activity, noise or odours. The setting may also give an impact upon the development by placing constraints on its location and scale.

Eligibility

  • The eligibilities for KOTA design competitions are categorized as below;


VILLAGE HOME COMPETITION

  • Open to all student currently enrolled in relevant diploma program OR any architectural programme leading to OR accredited OR equivalent to LAM Part 1 qualification at any participating institution INCLUDING participants and non participants of the 31st Architectural Student Workshop.
  • Participation covers individual entries only. Each individual is only allowed to submit a maximum of ONE (1) entry. There is no entry limit per participating institution.
  • Each entries will automatically represent their respective institutions.


CASTLE DESIGN COMPETITION

  • Open to all student currently enrolled in any architectural programme leading to OR accredited OR equivalent to LAM Part 2 qualification at any participating institution INCLUDING participants and non participants of the 31st Architectural Student Workshop.
  • Participation covers individual entries only. Each individual is only allowed to submit a maximum of ONE (1) entry. There is no entry limit per participating institution.
  • Each entries will automatically represent their respective institutions.

>INTENT

This competition will look at opportunities of designing dwelling and complexes by looking at the relationships between development and context, and contribute to the quality of the built environment for each of the participant’s Kingdom. The designers need to strive to balance development and respect for its character, to maintain and to enhance wherever is possible.


Main objectives of the competition are;

  • To express students creativity in design knowledge;
  • To allow students to critically analyse the qualities of the context to determine their implications for the design of the development;
  • To encourage students to broaden their architectural imagination.


>ACTION

Propose designs to commemorate the respective Kingdoms for the 31st Architectural Student Workshop in two different categories as described below;


Design Brief 1 - VILLAGE HOME DESIGN

  • The task of this competition is to design a typical village home based on respective Kingdom’s Identity;
  • The typical village house shall be designed for 5 occupants;
  • Participant are free to choose their site but it must be based on the selected region;
  • The design should take into account the surrounding context or the terrain of the chosen site;
  • The construction technology need to be workable even if it is fantasized;
  • The design should be emphasized on ornamental, layout, and local materials that symbolizes respective kingdoms.


Design Brief 2 - CASTLE DESIGN

  • The task of this competition is to design a complex of castle based on respective Kingdom’s identity;
  • Participant are free to choose their site but it must be based on the region selected;
  • The castle complex shall be designed within the range of 3 acres site only;
  • Spatial arrangement and space requirements for the castle shall be in determined based on narrative of the respective kingdom;
  • The design should take into account the surrounding context or the terrain of the chosen site;
  • The construction technology need to be workable even if it is fantasized;
  • The design should be emphasized on ornamental, layout, and local materials that symbolizes respective kingdoms.


>PRODUCT

Rules and Submission Requirements

  • Participants may register as an individual or a group with a maximum of THREE (3) members. There is no limit to the number of entries for each participating architectural institutions.
  • The conceptual design should relate to the kingdom chosen by each of the institutions.
  • All entries must be submitted in the following manners;
    • Maximum THREE (3) nos. of slide presentation (ratio 16:9) for purpose of 5 minutes pitching during judging session;
    • ONE (1) nos. of A0 (portrait) board presentation only for purpose of exhibition. Display of physical scaled model AND/OR 3d-modelling animation is/are optional;
  • The A0 (portrait) board presentation for the entry must contains:
    • TITLE of the Project;
    • ABSTRACT consist of explanation on design intention (100-200 words);
    • Clear indication of the original structure/building to be addressed to their chosen kingdom;
    • Entries should only include the participants profile (without revealing institutions name, logos etc.) on the presentation boards to ensure the anonymous judging of the competition;
    • Participants are free to choose their own drawing scales and explore the theme within the framework.
  • The organizer reserves the right to reproduce AND/OR retain in full or part of the submitted works AND/OR recordings for purpose of publication AND/OR purpose of archiving and exhibition AND/OR purpose of any promotional materials related to the Architectural Student Workshop, with credit of works remain owned by the submitter(s).

Judging Criteria

The jury shall evaluate the entries based on;

  • Originality and creativity of conceptual approach
  • Design execution
  • Visual presentation

Panel jury reserves the right to apply appropriate waiver in the case of insufficient qualified short listed entries for the judging session. ALL JUDGING DECISIONS MADE ARE FINAL.
